OUR STORY

We were formed as a non-profit NGO to operate activities and projects in Mongolia in support of its extraordinary Nature and Culture.

Our mission is to fund educational and awareness programs, innovation initiatives which focus on the sustainable and inclusive development of waste management across Mongolia and promote its unique nomadic lifestyle. Our aim is to strengthen local economic structures and practices across key sectors—tourism, waste management, and agriculture. The project places strong emphasis on community-driven development and is aligned with the principles of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme, promoting a sustainable balance between economic growth and environmental conservation.

Our NGO has been organizing the Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset international ultra-marathon in the Hovsgol Lake National Park for this purpose every year since 1999. Until 2020, the Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset has been the major source of fund for our NGO to operate single-handedly the garbage and litter management of Hovsgol Lake National Park.

Our work has been recognized by international donor organizations. The Asian Development Bank has partially funded our efforts and adopted our model for the whole Lake Hovsgol region in a three years project from 2017 to 2019.

From September 2020, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and Global Nature Fund have granted ecoDevshilt NGO an additional partial funding to expand activities in relation to waste management. This project included a major national awareness and media campaign over the next 3 years to urge Mongolian citizens not to litter.

We have successfully completed our previous projects and have commenced a new initiative funded by the German government. Eco Devshilt (ED) is currently implementing the project titled “UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Khuvsgul Lake – Income Generation of Nomadic Herding Communities through Sustainable Tourism” (2024–2028). This project focuses on fostering regional value creation through sustainable tourism, strengthening environmental practices, and promoting inclusive economic participation in Alag-Erdene Suum, northern Mongolia.
