UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Khuvsgul Lake – Income generation of nomadic herding communities through sustainable tourism 2024-2028

Our project addresses the current challenges faced in Khuvsgul National Park and Alag-Erdene Soum.

The project aims to drive regional economic growth, promote sustainable tourism, and enhance environmental conservation in Alag-Erdene Soum, Northern Mongolia. Through these initiatives, local communities will gain access to stable income sources while contributing to the long-term protection of Khuvsgul’s unique ecosystem.

Project Implementation (2024–2028)

To address these challenges, our team will implement targeted initiatives to enhance local livelihoods, promote sustainable practices, and strengthen community resilience.

Key Project Components:

  • Waste Management & Environmental Conservation – Establish a sustainable waste management system and promote environmental stewardship.
  • Dairy Production & Yak Milk Marketing – Support yak dairy production and develop market access for dairy products.
  • Greenhouse Vegetable Farming – Introduce greenhouse farming to improve food security and create new income opportunities.
  • Tourism Hospitality & Employment Training – Equip local communities with the skills needed for employment in the growing tourism sector.

Project Objectives & Expected Outcomes

1. Environmental Protection & Waste Management

  • By 2028, train 400 schoolchildren and 450 adults in Alag-Erdene Soum on waste management and composting.
  • Train 460 individuals in composting techniques; establish 160 specialists to manage composting in 30 ger camps.
  • By 2026, establish a model composting facility at the Hatgal Training Centre.
  • Implement a comprehensive waste management system to separate, recycle, and properly dispose of waste in Khuvsgul National Park.
  • By 2026, establish a waste collection center in Mankhan with two full-time employees, and encourage 100 households to adopt waste separation practices.

2. Economic Development & Employment

  • By 2027, train 90 individuals for jobs in the hospitality sector, with 45 securing employment.
  • By 2028, support 45 women in yak dairy production, ensuring 30% of products are sold to ger camps.
  • By 2025, upgrade the local dairy cooperative to enhance production capacity.
  • Conduct a market analysis within four months of the project’s launch to identify key economic opportunities.

3. Sustainable Agriculture & Greenhouse Farming

  • By 2026, establish a greenhouse cooperative model and complete a vegetable market analysis.
  • Support 10 women in vegetable production, ensuring 33% of produce is sold to ger camps by 2026.
  • Develop 240m² of greenhouse facilities to promote year-round vegetable farming.
